Camp DEM is a four-day experience designed around fun STEM activities that introduce middle school students to skills related to careers in local industries.

Camp DEM will be held June 5–9 at the Northwest Georgia College & Career Academy in Dalton. Thanks to local business sponsors, Camp DEM is free to students with lunch and snacks included.

Organizers conduct two camps during the same week. First-year campers will attend June 5–8 (Monday-Thursday). Camp for returning students will be June 6–9 (Tuesday-Friday). Sessions begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. each day.

Objectives of the camp are to:

  • Invest in students by providing exposure to relevant career education.
  • Improve awareness of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) skills & careers opportunities.
  • Improve understanding of advanced manufacturing & the floorcovering industry.
  • To have fun with the future of our community.

What to Expect

The camp, held each summer in June, targets rising sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders across northwest Georgia. The first Camp DEM was held at Dalton High School in June 2011 and focused primarily on members of the local Boys & Girls Club. Beginning in year 2, the camp moved to the Northwest Georgia College & Career Academy to use labs at the Career Academy and Georgia Northwestern Technical College.

Activities may change year-to-year; however, consistent activities have included designing and fabricating a race car using CAD software, creating electronic circuit boards from schematics, designing and constructing a hovercraft, understanding and building rockets, completing various chemistry activities, and creating a custom carpet design.

Students tour local advanced manufacturing operations, complete soft skills activities, and career interest assessments. Camp faculty include faculty from Georgia Northwestern Technical College and Dalton State College, members of local flooring industry companies, and teachers/counselors from both local K–12 systems.

A graduation ceremony is held on the last day of camp and is attended by parents, business sponsors, and community leaders. Students are recognized for outstanding performance in each subject area.

In 2014, Dalton State College faculty began leading students through chemistry activities related to the floorcovering industry. As the camp continued to grow, organizers decided in 2014 to create two separate activity tracks: one for first year campers and one for returning campers.
